Wokingham Common is a large open space in the town of Wokingham, Berkshire, England. It is located to the north of the town centre and is bordered by the River Wye and the A4 to the south. The common itself has been open space since at least medieval times, but it was enclosed by various Acts of Parliament from 1804 onwards.
Wokingham Common was named after John Howe (1751–1806), who purchased land on both sides of what became known as ‘The Causeway’, which ran between two roads leading out from either end (the south side being called Upper Belgrave Road). The area now known as Wokingham Common actually formed part of this causeway; however over time other uses have encroached upon it so much so that today only about one third remains open space with trees remaining intact throughout most sections due partly because they were planted many years ago before these developments took place.”
Wokingham Castle is a Grade I listed building, located on Wokingham Common. The castle was built in the 13th century by Edmund de Mortimer, 1st Earl of March, who is also known as Roger le Bigod (c. 1206–1237). It has been left to decay since then but still stands today because it is so well preserved.
Wokingham Castle was built as part of the great lordship of Cornwall and served as a fortress for its residents until 1490 when King Henry VII took over control from his cousin Edward IV after defeating him at Agincourt in France during war with France (1415–1450).
