The Kingsdown House and Gardens is a Grade I listed building, which means it’s one of the oldest houses in England. It was built around 1532 on the site of an earlier Tudor castle by Sir Edward Kingswood (1520-1586) who was Lord Mayor of London and one of the richest men in England at that time.
The house has been refurbished many times over its history but still retains some original features such as its Jacobean architecture with mullion windows or mullion windows with transoms above them. Today you can see examples inside dining rooms and living rooms which once belonged to Archbishop Laud who lived here from 1643 until his death in 1645 when he was imprisoned by Oliver Cromwell due to his support for Catholic beliefs during his time as Archbishop at Canterbury Cathedral Churchyard where he died soon after being released from prison so that they could bury him there instead!
